Mindstorms Connector Cable

As I mentioned in a previous post, my lego mindstorms wires have disintegrated (I mean the rubber insulation)… and some wires are broken… So, that means I am not able to connect all four motors to my RCX at the same time…. As these parts are no longer sold by Lego (superseded by the Mindstorms NXT), I thought my robot building ambition is going to die an early death.. luckily, I found a way to save my broken wire… A bit troublesome for me, but I guess I’ll give it a try eventually (or get my dad to help)…

In addition, I also managed to find the parts on ebay… First time I love ebay soooo much…

I just ordered 4 new wires…. Hope they’ll arrive soon and be in perfect working condition… then I can start building my ‘Optimus Prime’ soon… hahaha….

Fun and Frustration

March 1st, 2010

My robot building experience has been filled with fun and frustration…. The fun part comes from the excitement of the limitless possibility of the Lego Mindstorms set.. However, when trying to build more advanced robots, my experience soon becomes more frustrating than fun…

Firstly, some of the parts from my set were missing… it’s a long story behind why this set is incomplete… but anyway, that means most of the time, I got to innovate and build the robot using other parts to substitute… That was actually quite fun, except for the time wasted on trying to find parts that were probably missing in the first place…

The second most frustrating thing is with the connecting wires… The set comes with 4 such wires… and out of the four, 2 of them were faulty… thus, I am not able to connect all my motors and sensors to the robot at the same time… I can only either connect the 2 motors, or connect the 2 touch sensors… making my robot very limited in capability… and on top of that, since this Mindstorms RIS 2 is already superseded by the NXT, I don’t think I can purchase any new connecting wires…

So, that means, I probably will have to make do with what I have and build simple robots… Or… Well, I can purchase the new Mindstorms NXT 2 set… ummm…. Maybe I’ll wait till there’s a sale at my local lego shop, or some other major toy stores…

My first robot – The Roverbot

February 28th, 2010

Finally got around to building my first robot… Nothing fantastic… Just some kiddie stuff…. but I’m glad my ‘antique’ Mindstorm set is working fine, especially the motors and sensors… though some of my wires have started to disintegrate… maybe my house is too warm and humid… (and speaking of warm, this February is fucking warm… the hottest in 36 years????)

Anyway, I’ve taken a video of the robot to commemorate its birth… posted it to YouTube with my HTC G1… The video quality is quite bad, but basically, all the robot does is simple stuff like Turn Left, Turn Right, Move Forward, Move in Zigzag fashion etc..
